2021 is...

Posted in: # Mass Effect | 2021 posts | Anime | Knit/Crochet Stuff | Learning French Language | Learning German Language | Learning Russian Language | Reading | Reading Challenge

This post is the final post for this year.

I made it! I've updated this blog daily for the whole year! 372(!) posts in 365 days.
You can see the list of posts with links here.

Since this is a personal blog, my posts were mostly diary/journal-like though. I had fun doing it.

PAST
Let's see... what happened this year...
♛ I started reading books regularly again!
I do have some minor slump-like moments at times but it happened... and it's happening!
  • Reading Challenges
I have an ambitious aim - to read all the new/unread books in my bookshelf. That also prompted the birth of Pick-A-New-Book Jar and some other reading challenges. So far, I've picked 18 books from that jar and already finished reading 13 of them. Only managed to read two books from my not-rigid list (but no matter! They will be brought to next year :P)
  • Those Read Unread Books
    Finally read:
-- "The Hunger Games" and its sequels.
-- "Mansfield Park" by Jane Austen which I [surprisingly] liked.
    Finally finished reading:
    -- "情定愛琴海" (reread)
    -- "The Star-Touched Queen"
-- "Commemorative History of Sabah 1881-1981" (that non-fiction book)
    -- "Good Omens"...which honestly, I don't really enjoy reading.
  • Oh New Books!
Got a lot of those this year. But it makes it easy to refer back when I had posted about their arrival so I liked that. Oh yeah, I also found some rare Chinese novels: 還珠格格's Part 1 and Part 2, with covers that I wished to own.
♛ I knitted that haramaki
Last year, I wanted to learn to knit because of this haramaki pattern. After practising on other projects, I finally started knitting that haramaki and finished it months later. Haven't started any new knitting project as of now though.

♛ I got vaccinated for COVID-19
I posted about having trust issues in August. I want to avoid crowded places as much as possible so I never applied (registered?) to get vaccinated via the MySejahtera app. Fortunately in September, my father found a clinic where I can get the vaccination with peace of mind. *sigh* I don't know what I'll do with the booster one later... probably will be assigned to a place near home. Will there be a crowd? Probably.

♛ I started learning new languages
...Still in very, very early stages though XD. I'm re-learning French from scratch. I'm also learning how to write and read Cyrillic. Oh.. and I'm learning a bit of German (this looks scary at first but I discovered how fun it can be). I don't have a strict plan regarding this, I'm just going to learn according to my mood and pace.

PRESENT
I guess this is referring to me, today. Lol... All I think of now is I just want to finish watching all three seasons of "Fruits Basket".

FUTURE
Daily Blogging
I'm thinking of doing it since I managed to do it for this year. There are so many other ways you can make a post... and I haven't fully explore that haha. But hmmm... let me think more about it.

Piano
This is one of the things that I've thought early on that I must include in my 2022 goals(?). I want to play the piano daily (at least an hour). I seriously need the practice. (Daily blogging on my music blog? I wish!)

Weirdly though, since I started knitting, my hands feel somewhat more comfortable on the piano keys. It's like knitting helps the finger muscles develop or something.

Knitting... or crocheting
Since it helps with playing the piano, I'm thinking of knitting something.. maybe a blanket for next year. I don't know yet, really. I can also focus on wearables like hats (or beanies?) and socks (do I dare?).. Or just learn how to crochet.

Mass Effect 2
Kept repeating it here but I should really, finally, go finish that insanity playthrough...

Learning Languages
It's just a continuation from this year, I guess. Will I finally learn Italian by the end of 2022? :P [Notice anything?]

⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰
Less than an hour before 12am. I guess now is the right time to say goodbye to 2021 before I publish this post.

Goodbye, 2021~

11.11 Package

Posted in: 2021 posts | blog images | Books | Learning French Language | Learning Japanese Language | On This Day | Online Shopping Bag

So... these got delivered today. Fortunately it's PosLaju this time so they got here pretty fast. And yes, it's from 11.11 sale event.

Berlitz: Italian Phrase Book & Dictionary・Savoir Faire (Laura Lee)・The Midwich Cuckoos (John Wyndham)・Charlotte Brontë: A Fiery Heart (Claire Harman)

More non-fiction books! Two language-related books, another John Wyndham novel and a biography book. I don't know much about Charlotte Brontë so when I saw this on Bookxcess/BBW, I instantly wanted it. It's a beautiful hardcover book.. there's like a photo of her manuscript or letter (I think) inside the cover (dunno what that part is called 2022/05/12 edit: endpaper!). The paperback version is RM87+ on Book Depository... so I was lucky enough to get this for under RM20 on BBW's Shopee!

⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰

Going to make this an On This Day post because the old post is a short one. It's from 2009 and the title is: "Got the Monday Blues." Coincidentally, I just recently posted a colour-something Monday post last week XD

Everything is blue today. Black. Grey. Not colourful.
Oh.. past-me. We're still the same after so many years haha

I hate my procrastinating self more than ever.
Sigh. I still don't like that side of me. Still have the problem. Still trying to like find a way to live with it because it's not going away. I've accepted it as a part of my life. It's also related to my perfectionist side which is also something I'm trying to tone down... because I embrace the idea of imperfection is perfect. I think I'm better at managing it now (thanks to my one and only working experience in 2017-18).. nothing's gonna get done if I insist on perfection all the time. Sometimes, you just have to jump in blind and hope for the best. (The key here is sometimes, which is not equal to all the time, just repeating this in case you're skimming this part :P)

I just knew that I missed my course registration again.
No Japanese language class for me next semester and so on.
>_<
I still think about this sometimes. What if I succeed in registering for Japanese language course at that time? Will I be more confident in speaking Japanese now? My speaking "practice" now consist of me talking to myself (no need to pity me, I'm happy with this XD), repeating what I hear on Youtube etc and reading out loud the conversations I saw in Japanese mobile games I play.

I am grateful that I picked French when I couldn't register for Japanese. It was a totally new language for me at that time. I won't say that I excelled at it as I wanted to but I think I did okay despite having a hard time in uni.

Okay... that got long. Didn't mean to make this too long lol

Being Extra

Posted in: 2021 posts | Anime | blog images | Dorama | Interest: TV | Learning French Language | Netflix | Online Shopping Bag

Today I learnt that I shouldn't take months to finish watching "Moriarty the Patriot" because WTF is happening?! I got totally lost by the end. *laughs bitterly* The last scene was so dramatic and epic (that music!) but I'm just there wondering why that should happen. I couldn't make sense of Liam's motivation. This sounds like something you-need-to-read-the-manga kind of thing and I'm not sure I want to go deeper there.

Oh well I'll just rewatch it in the future. Maybe when I'm in the mood for getting in touch with your dark side kind of thing again. Pretty sure I was in that frame of mind early this year. Sometimes I wish "Maou" is available on Netflix because revenge stories are my kind of thing. (But that might make me miss Ohno though)

"Al Cappucino" ended the way I kind of imagine it would.  I think it ended nicely. I would've wanted more weirdo Sai-Lun in action but maybe that's asking too much XD

I forgot I have a label for TV dramas here which is "Dorama". Will add that label to any posts that need that.

⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰

So...these arrived today. I guess it's Risky Batch Part 3...?

A Room of One's Own and Three Guineas・The Chrysalids・The Day of the Triffids・Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell・Evil Eye
And these. Oh yes, I'm serious this time. I'm doing this!

Easy French Exercises・Easy Learning French Idioms
I don't how know yet how these books will be of help but since it's sold on BBW's shopee... I'll take what I can get.

Not even sure how I'm going to start studying (or learning) but it's happening!

13 Thoughts This Week

Posted in: # Mass Effect | 2021 posts | Art Stuff | Blog Meme | Books | Forty Winks and More | Learning French Language | Online Shopping | The Weather Looks...

Thursday 13 post!
  1. I'm waiting for J&T to deliver some 10.10 parcels.

  2. I'm window-shopping for books on Shopee. I'm thinking of translated books by Japanese authors.

  3. I just realised that now Book Depository asked for phone numbers in the delivery address section. I don't remember having that in the past.

  4. I need to clean and organise my room (again).

  5. I want to compile all my stationery and art supplies in one place and organise systematically because my system now has failed me *sigh*

  6. I've somewhat finished doing a list of books in my shelf (I mentioned in a post before about doing a static list). Still need to add my manga collection...

  7. Disabled the "Google Dictionary" extension. Chrome is being slow again so I'm trying to see if one of the extensions is responsible. But the dictionary recently sometimes work and sometimes it doesn't so I'm not missing having it.

  8. I feel like learning French again. Thinking of taking out my old notes and books from the storage box (or bottom shelf).

  9. Today's weather report: It's hot! I can feel the burn on my back when I was hanging up the laundry.

  10. Been playing "Viscera Cleanup Detail" recently and got reminded why I hate cleaning sometimes (sooo many things to do...). I should get back to killing aliens in ME3.

  11. I want to watch more horror movies.

  12. I've been taking Calcium supplement daily recently and I realised it helps me to fall asleep. Supposedly it helps with the sleep cycle (which I do have problems with). It's like the drinking milk thing to induce sleep. It works for me (I don't know if it's placebo effect or what). At night, I actually yawn (which doesn't happen always) and yearn for sleep. And I'm able to sleep more than 5 hours.

  13. Thinking of doing art stuff again but don't know where to start. I probably should do #5 first so that I know where to find my things.

Weird, Proud & French

Posted in: 2021 posts | Learning French Language | online quiz

Doing some blogthing quizzes again XD...

"How Weird Are You?"
Normal enough to know that you're weird...
But too damn weird to do anything about it!

"How Much Pride Do You Have?"
You have your proud moments, but you're also likely to be a little ashamed of them.
Don't be too hard on yourself. It's normal to want to make a stellar impression.

These two results are probably not like me hahaha.. I was expecting being at least 80% weird. Maybe I'm only a weirdo in my way of thinking, since I don't always act weird (at least not when there's an audience XD). A closet weirdo...? Although it's not my intention to hide how weird I am.

About being proud.. I'm not sure.. probably should be higher.

Did another random quiz with accurate result (lol):

"What Language Should You Learn?"
C'est super! You appreciate the finer things in life... wine, art, cheese, love affairs.
You are definitely a Parisian at heart. You just need your tongue to catch up...

The result made me laugh!! OMG.. It's like reminding me to study the language again. I actually took French classes in uni... haven't been doing any self-learning since then. But I do want to revise and learn more! It's just a bit hard to find a solid motivation to study.. I did think of getting my favourite books in French but haven't bought any so far.

Maybe... maybe I should just do it now? Like just jump into it. With no plans. That fits my [language] learning style more actually.

Of Old Posts & Old Fandoms

Posted in: 2019 posts | Arashi 嵐 | Learning French Language | Learning Japanese Language | My Fangirl Side | NaBloPoMo | Ohno Satoshi 大野智 | 蘇有朋

Draft from early 2019
One of the things I like about blogging and managing blogs is re-reading my old posts. They are basically my thoughts (at that time) being "recorded" online. And it feels so interesting to revisit them years later. It's usually "WHO ARE YOU??" for me but anyway they are still really interesting.

For example, this display of my dramatic side lol:

I CAN'T WORK WHEN I'M PRESSURIZED & I'M A PERSON WHO IS TOTALLY AFFECTED BY MOODS -from "Alec 苏有朋 VS Alex 苏友朋", posted on 12/Feb/2005

Mind you, I was a few months short of 17 years old at that time and I just started blogging.. Unfortunately, I'm still plagued by mood swings at present. I try to manage but yes, I still feel I have the problem. Sometimes I just feel too lazy to live.

Current day
So here's another draft post finally published today. I've been re-reading old posts again recently (because I was editing the labels and search description *just realised I can edit that too now*)... and as expected.

"WHO ARE YOU, PAST-ME?"

Haha. It really felt like re-reading my old diaries. Some of them I can recall and some surprise me "Eh that happened?"... and I'm a bit embarrassed of posts that showed my fangirl side XD. Hey! FYI, this blog survived at least three fandoms - I'm proud of those obsessive moments! I might not like them as much as I did before but I sometimes I revisit them. Sometimes. I think it's not an exaggeration that they shaped some part of me today. For example, my interest in foreign languages. Being a fan of Alec Su made me learn to understand Chinese and read Traditional Chinese (I'm bad at reading the simplified version). I don't have much chance to practise using them lately but I still watch chinese/taiwanese dramas... sometimes. And then later I became a fan of Ohno Satoshi & Arashi, which again made me learn to understand Japanese... Knowing how to read chinese helped me pick up kanji quite quickly (sometimes I will know the meaning before I know how to pronounce it). That was a big help to me nowadays because I play japanese mobile games daily.

My method of learning is haphazard but I enjoy using the skills now whenever it suits me. Used to buying chinese magazines from before, I'm not afraid to attempt-read japanese manga... it's easier nowadays because we have more resources to learn languages available online.

At this moment, I want to get better at French which I took up in University. Of course, at the same time I wish to expand my Japanese vocabularies and learn more Japanese grammar.

Don't you just love how this post turn from "re-reading old posts" into my adventures in learning foreign languages?

Two Thousand Ten

Posted in: 2011 posts | Arashi 嵐 | Blog Post Collection | Delayed Rebellious Phase (Cringeworthy) | Interest | Learning French Language | Nonsense | Ohno Satoshi 大野智 | Reminiscences

Just thought of doing this because I did a post on my year 2009, I want one for year 2010 too!

But I'll do it in this style : Past, Present, and Future.

Past : First Half (January-Jun 2010)
2010 was EVENTFUL. I did another NaBloPoMo challenge for January 2010 (which explains why there were so many odd posts in that month XD). My sister went to Selangor for PLKN. Semester 2 started and I did a few posts on my classes and happenings in university. I still have studying problems as usual. I made a checklist to help me but that was a total failure LOL. I also did a blog meme (did many but this one is special) that gave out interesting results.

Gosh! The difference between now and then!! Most of my posts are laid-back and some are personal thoughts... And I was still obsessed with Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato (Camp Rock effects, thank you).

Past : Second Half (July-December 2010)
From past experience, I usually don't blog much in mid-year. I don't remember much for 2010 too. Unless it's my obsession, course. Looking at my Tumblr's archive, it started with "Nodame Cantabile" in September.

And then Ohno Satoshi happened. It was declared in a tweet on Sept 26th.
Ohno Satoshi. Crush. *Hazukashi!!!* :") #maou

Maou.

Life is never the same again after I entered the Arashi fandom.

Pre-Present
It's going to be the 5th semester this coming semester. & I SCREWED UP A LOT. One VERY IMPORTANT fact that I realised in the 4th semester (DISASTROUS)- I don't like Maths. WHAT THE HECK. It took almost 2 years to finally accept this fact. TOTALLY SCREWED UP.

Some things changed last semester. Like suddenly having no motivation to go to French classes. That was so weird. It's like I never wanted to learn French in the first place. But I will continue learning the language though because it's my dream to be able to talk gibberish in several languages when I'm in panic mode.

Present
No more Yamashita Tomohisa. No more Joe Jonas. No more. Ohno Satoshi is different. Who would have thought it would come to this? The me who didn't care to buy any Arashi singles in the past ("NEWS' singles/albums are more important" thoughts) is now desperate to find extra money for Arashi's singles/albums/Live DVDs XD. That Ohno... is irresistible. He was always invisible to me but when I finally saw him, the other members are blurred out perfectly now. *starts talking nonsense* XD

Because of Ohno Satoshi & Arashi, I re-developed wishes to learn japanese again and it was smooth-sailing unlike last time. It's like... because I have a reason, I can stay interested. I see that it's really important for me to really want to learn a language to get the grasp of it. It's totally different from just wanting to learn for the sake of learning new things.

Future
Something I don't want to think of now

Jan 21st at random

Posted in: 2011 posts | Arashi 嵐 | at random | Courses | Learning French Language | Life | Ohno Satoshi 大野智 | Shopping Bag | University | University: Year 2

*I miss this place so much…* Wow, my last “at random” post was in May 2010!

Oh.

I’m kind of glad listing my resolutions like how they did in “Arashi no Shukudai-kun”… they become more reachable & doable. I ACTUALLY make the efforts to identify any problems I have and ACTUALLY thinking of how to solve them. Better yet, I ACTUALLY do most of the solutions I’ve thought of. Though, honestly, I’m not satisfied yet…but this is a good start, isn’t it?

Recent life is “frequently” Arashified. Like having blue as my new favourite colour. Like having that interest in learning japanese return once again. Okay, this one is quite serious. I’ve lost complete interest in studying French language. For this semester (the 4th semester), I’m taking the final class (3rd level) of French… & I am not as excited as before. It’s more like “Let’s get this done quickly so that I can go home” every time I go to language class. No enthusiasm at all. But… partly might be because I have to attend the class at night… hmm. Maybe not that. Anyway..continue – Like stop watching TV. Ah~ This Arashi effect surprised me. I used to like to watch TV (even listed it as one of my hobbies), but now… I don’t bother much ‘cos… I have plenty of Arashi TV shows and Ohno doramas to watch. I don’t know if it’s for the better or worse, but that’s just how it is now. (Sabishii sou da ne… What a lonely life I have.. haha).

New semester ka? I didn’t blog much about the previous semester. Honestly, it was horrible. Man… I say that for every semester but the 3rd one was really, truly horrible…especially the ending (results). And here comes another Arashi effect. Like having Ohno-san’s kind of patience and my-pace-iness. This is obvious, I think. I’ve always struggle with these thoughts :

I try to assure myself that everyone is unique thus they have their own unique ways of teaching themselves. Instead, most of the time, I try to comfort myself that I am me, their unique ways don’t work for me & I don’t have to worry if I learn from a different route. And it’s not easy. It’s still hard now because I keep seeing how my methods don’t give out results as good as those “gifted-in-memorising” students. (Oct 15th, 2010 post)

Ohno Satoshi is a living proof of my method [assumed]. So I shouldn’t give up on it. *starts to stare into space* ---

Erm. Next one. Like having blind confidence. This one is quite insane. Watching Arashi in “VS Arashi” (where they compete with guests in several sport-ish games. Hah. Sorry to bother you with this fangirl fact) made me realise that ‘blind confidence’ is quite useful (though I think most of them are feints really). I called this insane because I can’t really explain why and how it helps to have blind confidence. Anyway…

Have to let this out here. I have a coursemate (a close friend) that I think is still angry with me because of my irresponsibility (arguable) in the previous semester. We are still friends, still talk and exchange a few jokes with each other… but there exists an unspoken distance between us. I am quite relieved actually (which is bad, I guess?)  because she often got on my nerves last semester (didn’t happen much in my first year). I did reflect on that mistake (which wasn’t entirely my fault) but at the same time I welcome this “distance”. Why do I sound so evil in this paragraph…? Oh, well. Whatever. *attempts an evil smile but eventually fails*

I’m glad I purchased this last month. It’s now “…temporarily not for sale” on YesAsia. Sigh. The power of first press edition/limited edition~

Recently purchased books…

Posted in: 2010 posts | Books | Delayed Rebellious Phase (Cringeworthy) | Diana Wynne Jones | Family | Learning French Language | Me. | Shopping Bag | University: Year 1

I love books. But I’m not necessarily a bookworm. I really, really love to keep books. I still have many un-read books in my bookshelf.

---

Now I have 3 French dictionaries. Yes. I’m lexicon crazy. I’m not even sure if I’m going to use them much in the future. But I’m 75% sure I’ll use them. *self-denial*

The middle (dark blue one) is my first French dictionary bought at City Mall’s Popular Bookstore. I like the size… Not too big & not too small. Pronunciation guide is included unlike the light blue one’s (Oxford Learner’s). DSC00330That one was bought at Signature (or Eaton’s? ‘cos the stationary section is called that).

What I like about the Oxford Learner’s dictionary : Le (masculine) or La (feminine) is added straight away in front of every words. I just realised the importance of this in French dictionaries during class where the lecturer kept asking us if this or that thing is masculine or feminine. *sigh* It seems hard to guess if the thing is ‘male’ or ‘female’. I have to associate the things with masculine/feminine characteristics to help me remember which one to use. The other dictionary is a visual dictionary from Suria Sabah’s Times Bookstore. That’s self-explanatory, I guess. ;P

DSC00325

These are from the visual dictionary. Apparently some countries use le, some use la… The other pic… I was reminded of Jacques Clouseau (Pink Panther)’s “hamburger” blunders. Haha...

DSC00331 DSC00333

DSC00327 DSC00324

“What Your Teacher Didn’t Tell You (Vol. 1)”… That was a randomly-picked book. Like Eragon (I haven’t even read Eragon yet!). How can you resist a book with that title? It’s thought-provoking! What my teacher didn’t tell me? What should I know that ‘they’ don’t want ‘us’ to know? (The author, Farish A. Noor, is described as “Malaysia’s hippest intellectual” at the back cover.)

Actually, it looks like a history-ish book to me… but oh well. I’ll risk that. It might turn out good.

The other colourful-covered book is Diana Wynne Jones’ latest book, “Enchanted Glass”! I can’t find that book in Sabah, you know… I asked my mum to buy it for me (as gift! Haha..) when she went to KL for meetings (again) few days ago. It’s still wrapped in plastic… don’t feel like opening it yet. The first thing I thought of as I read the synopsis at the back is “House of Many Ways” (“Howl’s Moving Castle” 2nd sequel). Hmmm. Anyway… I’m saving this for a bad day. Yeah. You read it right. Bad day. A good book is the perfect pick-me-up on bad days.

Checklist : Jan 2010

Posted in: 2010 posts | Checklist | Learning French Language | NaBloPoMo | Piano | University | University: Year 1

This week seemed long to me. It felt like 2 or 3 weeks had gone by. Funny. I’d started showing some signs of slowness, laziness and procrastination. Hmmm.
So here’s why I created this checklist. It has to be really public because that would help me accomplish them. If I just write in a piece of paper or a notebook reserved specially for this, I will forget all about it (been there, done that!). If it’s blogged, everyone (at least those who read my blog… hehe) knows and my close friends will keep an eye on my progress (hopefully!).

// Last edited on Jan 11th, 2010. //
Goals
(   ) Do weekly lecture notes housekeeping, and review (if possible!). Make it a habit.
(   ) Do at least one math question for every topic (I’m majoring in Math, in case you’re wondering) everyday.
(   ) Play one new song on the piano perfectly.
(   ) Finish French class assignment.

Procrastination Score :
Week 1 - Slow, long week...
- Wasted two class-free days doing something else instead of housekeeping/reviewing my notes.
- Saturday was wasted on being sick.
- Sunday afternoon : Over-napped!

The Other Class.

Posted in: 2010 posts | Courses | Learning French Language | NaBloPoMo | University | University: Year 1

Been coughing like crazy since morning... I think I've caught the flu (it's flu season at my university). Feeling feverish now after French class.

Oh!! The class! Most of the students in my class are Chinese students (like being in 5 Science 1 again). One of them is the person I had confrontation with last semester (Ethics group). I really didn't see that coming. When I saw her walking towards the classroom, I went "Oh, no, no, no..." and it became clear that we're coursemates again when she asked what class I'm taking..bla bla bla.. "Oh, me too." Bummer.

My wish to learn the language surpasses the must-avoid-exgroup-members thoughts so there's no way I'm switching courses. I'm there to learn. It has nothing to do with her.

"Let it go already." Easy to remind myself that... but whenever I see them again I will forget that I'm letting it go. For sure, there's almost no chance for reconciliation 'cos I don't wish it. (& there I go again.) Urgh. Whatever.

Back to the class, the pronunciations were pretty hard but that's maybe because I'm new to this. I'd read a bit my brother's Russian dictionary before & I think Russian's more difficult. Hehe. Sometimes I feel like I'm talking like Fran (there are pronunciations that require you to sound nasal).
