General updates~

Shopping Bag

New books:
  • Hyouka #15
  • Azure & Claude #1
  • Azure & Claude #2
  • A Tale of the Secret Saint LN #4
"Azure & Claude" is new...? Doesn't look like it's the final volume (apparently it's on hiatus?). It has the tragedy tag though... not sure if I'm ready for that.

"A Tale of the Secret Saint" was totally an impulse-bought book XD.. It was around RM35 on Amazon SG (excluding shipping) so I didn't think much (like, just do it)... now it's at RM92++. Lucky!

... I don't know where I'll find the other volumes but let's think about that later!
There's also the kindle route (the price range is RM30-50 per volume) but I want something physical though, for things I love.

(received these on May 25th)

Preloved books

  • Lord Stanhope's Proposal
  • Spy x Family #4
  • The Man Without a Shadow
  • Tempests and Slaughter
The most expensive (RM22) one in this pile is the manga! Which is understandable because it's pretty much still in a good condition (and less than half the original price!). The others are pretty random choices. Though I picked "Tempests and Slaughter" because Tamora Pierce is one of the authors recommended to DWJ fans... so I'll try reading that later.

Kino's
[edit 2024-07-07: finally opened the package on July 7th lol]
  • 7th Time Loop LN #5
  • Last Boss Queen LN #6
  • If the Villainess and Villain Met and Fell in Love LN #1
  • If the Villainess and Villain Met and Fell in Love LN #2

(received today)

More preloved books found on Shopee...

  • The Third Twin
  • Hypothermia
  • Artemis
For "The Third Twin" & "Artemis", kind of curious of the authors' writing styles so I 'grabbed' anything I could find lol... "Hypothermia" was a totally random choice.

Games
I really couldn't forget the feeling of playing nonograms lol... I did find a few of them on Steam so that's settled(?) for now :P. It isn't very fun to play on the phone so I prefer the ones I can play on PC.

Oh yeah... saw that both Orwell games were (are?) on sale so I ended up getting those too. I can't wait to replay them!

(this part ↓↓ added today)

Currently, I'm low-key obsessed with the game "Wuthering Waves"~!... It's so funny how it happened XD

I first saw it became available on Epic Store & was curious enough to install it but didn't go through with the full installation (I didn't have enough disk space). Then I saw someone I subscribed to on Youtube played it on stream and got interested.

Anyway, one of the characters that I could play (can you believe it? I managed to get Jiyan & Calcharo!) as is someone that has dragon(?) power. I play the game using Japanese audio so imagine my surprise when I see who Jiyan's voice actor is... Ono Yuki! His voice sounded deeper than the ones I usually heard of him so I'm kind of disappointed I didn't guess it's him (but still super happy!).. The only one I recognised is Lingyang (Hanae Natsuki).

As of now, I've done the main story (whatever is available for now). I don't know if it's the best (or worst?) time (hormotional) for me to play the game because I cried doing some of the side quests.. seriously, what the heck was that? Usually it's the ones that caught me off-guard that made me cried buckets (like that one grandpa that wanted to get some cool echoes to court someone :P)

Bookish Red Flags

Posted in: 2024 posts | blog images | Diana Wynne Jones | online quiz | Reading | Youtube

Ooh did a Book Riot quiz today~
(got this one from a recent JesseTheReader video)

"What Are Your Bookish Red Flags?"

I got:

Well... that's exactly it lol. Finish 1 book, buy 5 more books XD

I guess I could add some more that I think are my bookish red flags...
  1. I hate-read, because I rarely DNF books I've purchased (even if they are cheap/thrifted). To give the book 0.5-2 stars has been one of the few things that motivates me to finish a book. ✿ No worries, I don't really believe there are that many hidden gems out there so I don't feel like I'm missing out (positive pessimist here). I consider myself pretty picky with what I start to read so there's less regret regarding that.
  2. I used to dog-ear my books but now I seldom do it after "being scolded" by one of the characters in Diana Wynne Jones' "Fire and Hemlock"... (I don't remember the exact words and scene though)
  3. I... read in the bathroom. I finished many books through this method (even during reading slumps) so leave me be XD ✿ Good(?) news - some books I've soft-DNF-ed ended up here~
  4. I don't really consider this a red flag but most avid readers might consider so - I don't mind books with movie/TV drama covers :P ✿ I grew up watching/reading(?) some of Qiong Yao's TV dramas/books and let me tell you, some of her [first edition?] books have those covers [Examples in this blog: HZGG & HZGG2]. Totally not weirded out by them. I don't feel as much prejudice as the others towards them.
  5. Also, not sure if this is a red flag because it sounds more like an eccentric habit. Though I don't do it for all. I am friends with spoilers! That doesn't mean I'm okay with being spoiled all the time - I want it to be on my own terms. I sometimes read ahead, jump around to read spoilers...& flirt with spoilers XD

Elio

Posted in: 2023 posts | Diana Wynne Jones | Reading

Happy to report that I just finished reading "A Tale of Time City"... and my no-good [selective?] memory has been a great help again~ Totally forgot all about the plot twists so it's like reading again for the first time. Last time I read the book was in January 2017. I think my favourite character is Elio and he's an android (of course lol).

Now I'm kind of excited to finish the remaining books I'm currently reading!
This coming from someone who enjoys finishing books more than starting them lol...

It's so random that I want to read "Don Quixote" while still having a physical book reading slump. The book is almost 1000 pages lol (Am I crazy???)

"lost"

Posted in: 2023 posts | Diana Wynne Jones | Life: Anecdotes | Reading

Finally finished reading "The Homeward Bounders" yesterday. I vaguely remembered what it was about but when I reread the book, it still feels new to me... I guess that thanks to my not-so-good-and-sometimes-selective memory. Anyway, I went with "The Mill House Murders" as next book to read... Don't think too much, just start the book- kind of vibe.

...there are some books I'm interested in reading but they haven't arrived yet :P

⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰

Neighbour's "lost" cat has been hanging around, most probably because I've been feeding it some cat food... can't help it, she gives out one of the most cute meows I've ever heard 😭... and she looks like she wants some food. For the record, I'm calling her the neighbour's "lost" cat because she's our right-side neighbour's cat but she kept getting "lost" at our place... for some reason.

Familiar

Posted in: 2023 posts | Diana Wynne Jones | I Need to be Distracted | No Mood | Reading

Haaah... I wanna read something familiar today. Writing styles I'm familiar with &  comedic sense I'm used to...

I guess there's no helping it, I'll pick one of Diana Wynne Jones' books to reread this week~

Nice weather

Posted in: 2023 posts | Diana Wynne Jones | In Zombie Mode | Reading | The Weather Looks... | Web Novels

Sunny day... and that's all that matters today.

Finished reading a book today. It's a short one but the feeling of accomplishment is great. I actually want to try that 'not reading new physical books' idea or something close to that and then I went and give myself another idea today - to reread books (specifically, DWJ books). Nothing is set yet really because it could backfire but I'll keep it in mind.

Truthfully, I'm quite content with finishing [and adding more on the side :P] my pile of unfinished Japanese web novels (lol) but if I spend my time with only them I worry that my physical book reading slump will get worse. I know how bad that will affect and twist my expectations for traditionally-published books...

Not the Ogre

Posted in: 2022 posts | Diana Wynne Jones | Reading

I finally finished "The Ogre Downstairs".

And I'm ahead the schedule. Kind of proud of myself today lol

I actually enjoyed the last part of it. It wasn't as dark as "The Time of the Ghost" and it's better when you know the Ogre is really just another parent learning to be a better parent (I guess this info is spoilerish #oops). I think I was just not in the right time to read it. I'm at this phase where I don't want to watch/read anything with family drama(?) because why do I want to invest my time in another people's problems? Something like that. I kind of knew that the Ogre will not be as bad as they described so I dread reading what bad things they are going to do before they realise that.

...also caught up with those reading schedules. I finished one book ↑↑. For the other book, I reached the page I'm supposed to be at yesterday... after not doing it for almost a week lol (I guess that's the advantage of reading it 4 pages per day haha). It would be nice if I can also finish that early...

Petty

Posted in: 2022 posts | blog images | Diana Wynne Jones | Family | Online Shopping Bag | Reading

"My family can be surprisingly petty for the pettiest things in the world... and I love them for it." -Me, who is enjoying the drama(?) in silence.

Nothing really... just another day dealing with annoying neighbours~

⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰

Received this today.

"Drowned Ammet". Another book from DWJ's The Dalemark Quartet series. I just need one more ("The Crown of Dalemark") to complete the series (the owning part, not the reading part lol).

I can start reading this actually since the book I don't have is the last one in the series. Surprisingly, I now have an almost complete series of this. Years before this, I was worried because I always thought I need to get all at once (so it would be more expensive to buy)... Getting them one by one is a great idea! Anyway, if I can't find it on Shopee I can just use Book Depository later (since it's only one book).

⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰

Still having a slow reading day (weekend?). I might need some help....

Chaotic Saturday Morning

Posted in: 1st post | 2022 posts | Diana Wynne Jones | In Zombie Mode | Pick-A-New-Book Jar

I woke up to a chaotic morning, and I wasn't even needed in the scene.

Well, I would've woken up early anyway but *haaah* currently I'm in semi Zombie mode... and my brain is not in proper order.

Anyway. Haven't finish reading "The Ogre Downstairs". It's like... giving me "The Time of the Ghost" vibes so I'm going to read this slowly. That means I have leftovers again XD... so since I don't see myself finishing it today or tomorrow, I'm going to do the jar today!

Here we go.

*shakes jar*

And...... I got "Roadside Picnic"! Another book from the Strugatsky brothers.

Oooh.

Okay, now I'm nervous. Hopefully I won't get too many headaches this following week. I really can't read anything when my head is in pain :/ (Tried it with "Love in the Time of Cholera" and I have no memories of what I read yesterday XD)

A Fine Pick

Posted in: 2022 posts | Diana Wynne Jones | No Mood | Pick-A-New-Book Jar

Not surprised that I haven't finish "Easy Go" today. Was in an irritable mood at the end of the week. Fortunately, the story is still interesting enough to read. Since it will be the last week for September where I pick books from the jar, I'm just going to go with it today.

*picks a title from the jar*

I got... "The Ogre Downstairs" by Diana Wynne Jones.

Well, well, well... what a fine pick that is XD

Wow, I'm actually happy that I got this one. Never read it before. Familiar writing style.

Kind of looking forward to this!

Perfect

Posted in: 2022 posts | Diana Wynne Jones | No Mood | Reading

Just finished "The Pinhoe Egg"... *sigh* it was such a great read. Perfect after a 1-star reading experience. Feels like I'm "home", back to familiar writing style.

A bit sad though because this means I've also finished re-reading the Chrestomanci series. Time to start  [re]reading her other books!

My reading list has officially gone down to three books on GR. Yes, I have more but I'll pretend not to see that lol

Haven't got the same luck(?) with my big goal of the month. I feel like my moods are always down and changing this month. You can see how I have more days where I don't post anything in August. Most probably will not see that goal get completed in the end. I will still try to attempt my small goal. Not sure about the blogging ideas I have for next month though.

I don't feel like thinking about it.

Games

Posted in: 2022 posts | Diana Wynne Jones | Interest: TV | Reading

Started reading "The Pinhoe Egg" yesterday. It has been fun so far. Like meeting an old friend. Most of the time I'm almost in tears though, I don't know why some scenes make me feel that way.

Probably will change this book's rating to 5 stars too.

Also, my recent obsession... Japanese movies that feature deadly/survival games...! Started from when I saw "X Game" few days ago. Now I'm trying to watch anything available on TV... currently in the middle of "Battle Royale" (never seen this before!).

Slow Brain Day

Posted in: 2022 posts | Diana Wynne Jones | In Zombie Mode | Reading

Zombie mode day. Sleepy. Not much reading done. Still managed to finish "Mixed Magics" (well, it was just one more short story left so it's not that hard) after midnight (so early morning?). Still... no, I think I loved the book more this time. It's so weird. I'm loving books I don't used to like in the past recently lol. Although maybe this one was more like I'm appreciating it more after encountering several short stories that I don't like... anyway, yeah loved it, ended up giving 4.5 stars for it (rounded to 5 on Goodreads).

We had a blackout last night. I think it's as long as the last one we had. Fortunately it was raining so it was a pretty cold night. Drank more water.. but I didn't really sweat that much so no headache like last time. Played Uno in the dark with my sister XD

The Magicians of Caprona

Posted in: 2022 posts | Diana Wynne Jones | Reading

Finished "The Magicians of Caprona" early morning (midnight?) today. To answer my own question few posts ago, last time I read this was in August 2010. Just short a month to 12 years.

Again, similar to "Witch Week", I had fun rereading this. Really. I'm even surprised by myself. I used to feel that the book was too long but today I stand corrected (It's actually under 300 pages!). The beginning still felt long to me but since I already know the main spoilers, it wasn't much trouble. Still think that it has too many characters but I figured that you just have to remember the main ones and their direct family (I guess). Doesn't matter if I don't remember the names of their uncles, aunties and cousins etc, you won't get lost in the names. Just focus on the story.

I can even imagine this being adapted into movie (a long one, hopefully lol) or TV series (best). Maybe even a play or musical, since it involves singing.

...oh gosh, I never thought I'll say this but... I love this book. Thinking about it brings joy. Of course, it's not an absolute favourite but I guess I don't mind doing a regular reread of it in the future...?

Next to read from the Chrestomanci series: "Conrad's Fate" and "Mixed Magics". Yes, two of them... together XD. I don't know why but it felt lonely when I read "Mixed Magics" in the past so I'm going to pair it with a longer story. "The Pinhoe Egg" will be last.

Humid Friday?

Posted in: 2022 posts | Diana Wynne Jones | Reading | The Weather Looks... | Weekend Musings

It just started raining. I was just about to start this post with how hot and humid today felt (although there's no rain throughout the day... I think).

So, nothing much to mention about today. Still woke up with a headache but it went away after eating brunch. Yesterday's was terrible, even felt it around one of my eyes. So glad that today I feel better.

Since I finished reading "Convenience Store Woman" early, I started reading "The Magician's of Caprona" few days ago. When was the last time I read this? I completely forgot most of it lol.. I mean I remember some of important events but not all.

Re-reading books is fun! I don't get why people won't read a book they read before again. I guess maybe not for the bad ones...? I don't have like a perfect memory so sometimes when I re-read books, I find stuff I never noticed before... or relate to/learn new things as I get older... the reading experiences can still be different even if you already know how they end!

(End of post: I don't hear the rain anymore hmm...)

(Minutes later after published: Nope. Still raining. It's on and off...)

Bagatelle

Posted in: 2022 posts | blog images | Books | Diana Wynne Jones | Online Shopping Bag | Reading

Titled after a word that appears so many times in "Sophie's World". I only knew about the music-related definition. I should add that to my everyday vocabulary :P - like "Gah, a mere bagatelle!"  or something - and make myself more confusing than ever to everyone else.

Oh gosh I finally finished "Sophie's World".

I probably would appreciate this book more if I read it during my teenage years - now I'm too untrusting (I was very suspicious of Alberto in the beginning) and jaded to enjoy the philosophy lessons. It was interesting at first, then it lost me in the middle (but not enough to DNF it)... got interesting again near the end.. and lost me again somewhere after that lol.

It did get me interested in some of the people mentioned there so maybe (MAYBE!) I'll read about them on Wikipedia later.

That's another book off my 2021 currently-reading leftovers~

...haaah now I wanna go read some manga...

⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰

Received this today. Diana Wynne Jones' "Power of Three". Preloved copy. Besides the yellowed pages, it's actually in a good condition. Kind of glad to get this version - it's the same cover of the one I borrowed from school library decades(!!!) ago.

Bought from Books n Bobs on Shopee
I mentioned about this book before last year.
Also made me want to seek out Diana Wynne Jones' "Power of Three" which to me somewhat represented the local politic scene (okay maybe not so much of the politic side... things like main races and the stereotypes).

Not going to read it now but I look forward to rereading and see if I still feel/see the same thing. What I remember was: it's about three different types of people(creature?), who generally has their own ideas and prejudices of the other two, and what happens when they meet... yeah probably got some of that facts wrong but well~ that's why I need to reread it. But not now. Not yet.

"Someone in this class is a witch." -Witch Week

Posted in: 2022 posts | Diana Wynne Jones | Pick-A-New-Book Jar | Reading

Finally finished reading "Witch Week" today. This is actually my least favourite one in the Chrestomanci series (so I always dread rereading it). I do love how it ends though so sometimes I just power through the beginning parts.

Hmm... I guess I just don't like how oppressive it is... and there are many characters here (but I remembered most of them so that's not really a problem lol), I used to think it was tiring to follow their stories in the past. But this book does benefit from rereading though because once you knew who is who, you want to look out for signs or something upon rereading. I had [better] fun this time around. Although I still have that natural inclination to not want to read this through *sigh*. I also changed my rating to 3 stars - because it doesn't seem fair to give this the same rating with "The Time of the Ghost", at least according to my preferences that is.

⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰

Time to pick a new book from the jar~

Hopes? An easy read, perhaps? Not classics.

Okay... *picks*

....I got Roald Dahl's "Trickery".

A pretty recently-purchased book lol.

Honestly, quite tempted to skip this one because it's a short story collection (haaah)...but it's only 240 pages... I should feel lucky :P

Expiring Cards

Posted in: 2022 posts | Diana Wynne Jones | My Worrying Side | Reading

Another day for more things to worry about...

Recently, I realised that my ATM debit cards will expire this year (surprisingly both are in the same month). Checked online to see if I need to make an appointment... but looks like I don't have to...? At least for Maybank's, I can do it online. Couldn't find similar article for CIMB on their website but I found this site (seems doable too).

Now the only problem is when do I do that? A month before they expire? Two months?

⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰

Finally finished "Castle in the Air". I think I had a better experience in reading the book this year. Maybe because I stopped expecting it to be something like a sequel for "Howl's Moving Castle"? Still, there are some stuff that I'm not really keen on in the story.

A Needed Distraction

Posted in: 2021 posts | Diana Wynne Jones | The Weather Looks...

It's raining outside.

It's YA week on Goodreads so I decided to reread "Archer's Goon". I did have plans to reread some DWJ books including this. The YA week just gave me the reason to do it now.

Also, finished reading "Newcomer" early morning today. I liked it. It's another book that features Detective Kaga (from "Malice", which I also enjoyed). At first, I gave 3 stars on GR but decided to change it to 3.5 stars. (rounded to 4). I recalled how I'm dissatisfied with some mystery-themed books I read recently (too wordy and long-winded), so I must give it credit for making me enjoying what I read again.

I don't know since when I have such preferences. As of now, I want to read something written in a style I like and can appreciate. Yes, story is important, but if it's written badly, I don't think I can enjoy the book. Realised many of these in popular books which is one of the reasons I don't tend to read popular, trendy ones. I had read a few in the past that received good reviews on GR but I don't like it.

Skipped knitting yesterday to let my hands rest. Might do some today while watching videos on Youtube.
